Why I love my job as a makeup artist and how you too can live your dream job!
In today’s pictorial world we are always seeing those uplifting quotes, in fact, they are everywhere on social media, “do what you love, love what you do” or “live your dream job” but can we really love what we do or find happiness in our jobs as we are trying to seek financial security?
I am one of those lucky ones who spent my entire career doing what I loved and living my life professional life on my own terms. It wasn’t always easy in my chosen industry to find financial security and do what I love as a career, in all honesty, it was tough. I worked many part-time jobs that I very much disliked at the beginning of my career to keep a roof over my head and keep my family secure. But as with everything in life if we work hard, stay consistent, maintain the highest level of integrity, and get through the struggles we will break through and find a rhythm that produces financial rewards as well as a career we can be proud of and love.
So what if you are currently not working your dream job? How do you even begin to get into the career of your dreams or work to make your dream job a reality?
You start with doing your research. Find all there is to know about the career you want to pursue. Does it require further education, will you need to invest any money, will it give you financial rewards in your current location or will you need to commute? Start a plan of action in a new notebook dedicated to your DREAM JOB. Start with your “WHY.”
Why do you want to pursue this new career, what do you hope to gain from it, are you interested in it enough to do it full time or would you rather do it on the side as a second job to let you have some career enjoyment. Remember you don’t have to give up a good job in order to pursue your dream job.
I started my career in my dream career but not exactly in my dream job. Even though I started out in the beauty industry I didn’t start out as a makeup artist. It wasn’t exactly a career that would bring me any money back when I got started and in the location where I lived no one had even heard of professional makeup artists, so I had to start with a beauty career that would get me into the industry but in an area that also brought me a good income.
Today, however, after 23 years of working diligently toward my end goal and following my plan I am doing what I love and making money as a Professional Makeup Artist. And I know you too can live your dream job!
I am a Freelance Makeup Artist, I get to do some amazing things with my career. I work runway fashion shows, I do stylized photo shoots with fashion photographers and fashion models, I do portrait makeup, I do bridal makeup and as an added bonus and my favorite part of my job, I teach makeup classes. I am doing exactly what I love and have the career I always dreamed of. I travel locally and internationally, I attend NYFW twice a year as an invited makeup artist, and I teach makeup classes across the US and have even been invited to teach internationally. I am the author of four makeup related books and I am a beauty blogger. But with all that, I still had to do the work that is required to get to this point in my career and if you want to live your dream job you will too.
Let’s start with the steps you will need to take to get going on your dream job.
It will be up to you to begin your plan of action. The word action is very important here because without action a plan is just words on paper. So get yourself a brand new journal and write down what you really want to do and what your why is. Knowing your why is the beginning of any dream whether its a new job, a vacation, or even that new dress. Why do you want it and what will it take to get it! You will need to answer these three questions honestly and with great intention.
What do you want to do?
Where do you want to do it at?
Why do you want to do it?
This step will be the beginning stages of your plan of action. Your plan is a living document and will change as you learn more about your new career path and where you want to take it.
To understand the career and industry you want to pursue you will need to do your research. Head over to the Bureau of Labor Statistics or OOH and put in your career choice and find out if the career you are looking to enter is a fast growing industry, what the median income is and if you need the education to pursue the career. The research portion of your plan will help you to decide if the dream job you are pursuing will net you an income or if it will be more of a hobby. Honestly, it doesn’t really matter if you choose to pursue a job that doesn’t pay well as long as you make it a part-time gig and enjoy the journey of it. Another aspect of your research should be to reach out to those you admire in your chosen profession. They can help to answer any questions you might have and give you guidance on how to get started and where to get the best education if it’s needed. Never be afraid to ask others for a little of their time for questions, if they love what they do, they will be more than happy to help out a fellow newcomer and give a little of their time to get started.
Shadowing is a great way to get a first-hand look at the career you are considering in your future. I suggest you job shadow someone in the industry you admire and connect well with. Connect with someone who is can easily explain what they do, how they do it, and how you too can enter the industry. There is no better way to get to know any job than by being right there to observe someone who is actually doing the job and living their dream job. Shadowing gets you first-hand knowledge of the job and a deeper understanding of what will be required of you if you decided to pursue it as a career for yourself. Remember, to ask questions throughout the job shadow and keep a journal to take notes and use it as a reference as you continue to do your research into the career of your choice.
Starting a new career or a second side job can be scary at first, you will need to make as many connections as possible in the field of your choice and build those connections into lasting relationships. Building relationships will be the stepping stone to collaborating with the influencers of your new industry and they will be the mentorship you need to get started and keep you on track when things get tough.
And they always get tough as stated by experts from utilitysavingexpert.com! Yes starting a new career or building a business from the ground up is the hardest thing you will ever do in your life and keeping it going will require all you have as a person. Collaborating helps you to get you working in your new industry and will keep you inspired to follow through on your new journey. Find the influencers in your industry and get them your products or services then let them share how great they are.
It is time to pursue your new career with great determination and desire. There is no way to achieve great success in your dream job without a complete focus on your end game and the willingness to do whatever it takes to get the results you are looking for. This pursuit will not be easy it will require persistence, consistency and unwavering determination to achieve your goals. The future is in your hands and will depend on you to make it live up to your desired dreams. You might find it tough at times and business guidance often is limited.
