Start with where and when you can practice and who you can practice on. Get your faces lined up on Sunday for the week ahead and then use time as your friend to fit in your face time practice sessions. Maybe its nap time or after bedtime for the kids, maybe its play date time when you meet with a friend, set your kids to an activity, and you slay out her face with makeup. Maybe it’s after work on your way home or a Friday night with friends having a wine and makeup mingle. No matter when you practice or where you practice make sure you are getting before and after pictures to use on your online portfolio, this is a must for any aspiring or pro makeup artist.
- Learn-Find the the time for education: Create a weekly skill goal and start learning that topic until you have mastered it. Don’t let the fact that you are a pro or aspiring makeup artist deter you from learning. To stay ahead of the competition and to know what’s hot and what’s not you will need to increase your skill level by getting as much makeup artistry education as possible. How? Use video tutorials from trusted sites or those makeup artists whom you love as a guide. Make sure that the videos you watch are short and specific to the skills you want to learn and don’t get distracted by other videos that are not in your weekly skill goals. Keep it to one topic per week and set a time frame for yourself maybe three hours a week in the evenings to watch videos or attend online classes specific to that technique. Then take that skill and practice it on the faces you have scheduled that week with friends and colleagues.

- Collaborate-Network with those who share your vision: Working with others is the fastest way to grow your business and collaborating with those who are in the same biz or are closely related to your business is crucial for building your income. Reach out to photographers and get on their list of makeup artists, reach out to models and become their exclusive MUA for all their photo shoots. Add them to your list of contacts and share opportunities with them. The business of makeup artistry only works when your are all in it together and working towards a common goal. Use Facebook groups in your area targeted to photographers and models. Interact, mingle and get to know those in your area who are willing to refer you and who are looking to work with reliable and hard working makeup artists like yourself. Be the first person these people think of when a request for a makeup artist comes up!
