How to Determine Your Skin Tone for a Perfect Foundation Match

Picking the correct foundation color should not be taken lightly, even if the foundation matches you in terms of how light or dark it is, if you have warm skin and you get a pink foundation it will look off and tend to make you look orange. Cool skin tones will find warm hued foundation (yellow) will make them look very yellow and even if it looks right in a mirror it will show up in pictures as yellow and you will look tired and washed out to others.

Undertones on you face and body differ from person to person, it is as individual as you are. So when it comes to foundation, you should try to match it as perfectly as you can to the undertone of your face, your jawline, your neck and your chest. This is where it really matters when picking out the best foundation for acne prone skin.

So what is your skin tone?

Some skin looks more yellow or has a yellow hue, other’s pink or olive with a green hue, some will say they have a peachy undertone and dark skin tones might say they have a red undertone, but in general all skin tones fall into three categories: warm, cool and neutral.

Warm skin tones tend to be more yellow, cool skin tones are pinker, while neutral skin tones have a mix of both colors.

But what about olive skin tone? Well some say it counts as neutral a mixture of both blue and green, but you will need to look to see if your shade of green is more yellow or bluer.

Let’s Determine Your Skin’s Undertone

Warm: Yellow undertones, green veins, white clothing makes you look vibrant, and gold jewelry suits you best.

Cool: Pink undertones, blue veins, beige clothing makes you look vibrant, and silver jewelry suits you best.

Neutral: A mix of cool and warm undertones, white and beige make you look vibrant, gold and silver jewelry suit you, your skin tans but it can also burn.

Let’s Determine Your Ideal Foundation Shade

Undertones on you face and body can differ, but when it comes to foundation, you should match it to the undertone of your neck and chest.

Warm Undertone: Look for a foundation with a yellow hue and make sure to test it down your jawline and into your neck. If at all possible walk out into the natural light to determine that the color melds into your skin and be sure give it time to oxidize. You will know it’s perfect when you can barely see it when you apply it, remember you are trying to match your skin color not change it.

Cool Undertone: Look for a foundation with a pink hue or ash hue and make sure to test it down your jawline and into your neck. If at all possible walk out into the natural light to determine that the color melds into your skin and be sure give it time to oxidize. You will know it’s perfect when you can barely see it when you apply it, remember you are trying to match your skin color not change it.

Neutral Undertone: Look for a foundation that has a mixture of warm and cool or if you can’t find this you may need to mix your colors to create the perfect match. Make sure to test it down your jawline and into your neck and if at all possible walk out into the natural light to determine that the color melds into your skin and be sure give it time to oxidize. You will know it’s perfect when you can barely see it when you apply it, remember you are trying to match your skin color not change it.
